I got home a few hours ago with my haul from Record Store Day today. It was a fine day: the weather was nice, lots of friends out in line at Celebrated Summer, I got everything I set out to buy, along with some stuff I didn’t immediately consider.
The standout, if you are in Baltimore or from here, was Double Dagger’s swan song, “333”. Although they broke up last year, it was great to queue up one last time for one of their records. And, yet, it’s so bittersweet to know that Bruce, Denny and Nolen may never make music together again.
I opened the packaging to check everything out. It’s great packaging; Josh & Frank’s photographs on one side of the inner sleeve, a thanks list and lyrics on the other. I’m sitting on the couch listening and reading along.
I feel like I’m at my brother’s funeral, smiling at the memories, sobbing at the loss. I also feel like a total shit for equating a band breaking up with death. But Double Dagger was the common denominator. For three generations of Baltimore indie kids, be they punks, freaks, students or passers-by, this was THE sound, THE milemarker.
I am so very sad to see them go.
I am so ready to take their inspiration and create something new.
